Schreiter and Zavala-Ruiz are awarded NSF Instrumentation Grant
On January 1, 2010, Eric Schreiter and Zarixia Zavala Ruiz were awarded $516,658 via the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation funding mechanism (NSF MRI-R2: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09561/nsf09561.htm) to enhance the Macromolecular X-ray Crystallography Facility of the University of Puerto Rico. The award will primarily be used to acquire robotics for high-throughput crystallization screening of macromolecular samples such as proteins and DNA. Crystallization is usually the rate-limiting step to obtaining high-resolution three-dimensional structural information about biological macromolecules by x-ray crystallography. The new instrumentation will enable new structure determination projects by allowing more solution conditions to be examined using ~10-fold less sample.
For more information about the capabilities of the new instrumentation, please contact Eric Schreiter (eschreiter@vmail.uprrp.edu) or Zarixia Zavala-Ruiz (zarixiazavala@vmail.uprrp.edu).
