Research activity in the Chemistry Graduate Program at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus has steadily increased in recent years, primarily due to the recruitment of new research faculty, the acquisition of state-of-the-art instrumentation, the establishment of research-support departmental facilities and a solid record in obtaining external research funding from federal agencies and private foundations.
The Department of Chemistry has strong research programs in the following areas:
- marine natural products
- organic and organometallic synthesis
- photochemistry and photophysics
- theoretical chemistry
- bioinorganic chemistry
- environmental analytical chemistry
- X-ray crystallography
- molecular dynamics
Research activity in these areas has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journal and in many presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Strong collaboration of the department's research faculty with that of other research centers in Puerto Rico and abroad has increased the program outreach and expanded research capabilities in several areas.
